Parts on Hold, Research on Design Routes

The Hardware/Software Dilemma

There doesn’t seem to be an easy way out here

I already wrote the client code in python but translating that into C for the esp32 is proving to be harder then I thought. So far I’ve tested each of the few components in the circuit individually but I’m struggling to get them all working together. I’ll keep at it but I feel that my inexperience and the esp32-S3 hardware in general will limit what I’m able to do with this project. I know the S3 is capable of being a good client but to get the V2 done in a reasonable timeframe I might go back to python. I bought another raspberry pi zero that will be the backup in case I can’t get this working. The redesigned propulsion system should be able to handle this anyway. I’ve been doing a bunch of research on embedded Linux so if the esp32 doesn’t work out I might try to make a custom SBC for the V3.

The Esp has all the hardware I need in a small package but the software is harder to get working. I already have the python code but I’d need to add a camera and possibly design my own embedded Linux board to get the features I need.

Hello to an Old Friend

The AI Server is working again!

I though I lost my code when the server went down but thankfully I was able to get 45 running again. The software behind 45 changes fast so the installation process was broken like usually. Thankfully I was able to find a workaround and now the server is ready for the Esp32 client (whenever I get that working).

Hope for Quiet and Efficient Flight

Who knew they make gearboxes for 6mm motors!

While the large two blade propellers where working to get the balloon in the air, they were hitting the current limit of the motors. I have an image of the motors I plan on using in the gallery below but some of them go up to a 700:1 ratio. This slow rotation will eliminate vibration (which was causing most of the noise) and reduce prop noise. I’ll need to design new high thrust propellers and the gearboxes will produce noise but I hope some experimentation will find the sweet spot. I’m waiting on these motors to come in so that is why the physical design is on hold right now.

Plans For Next Week:

Get the Esp Client code working?

I didn’t mention it in the post but I got the glass in to fix the reactor. My current one seems to be holding so it might be another week before I find time to fix it. I made a new top overflow sensor and I setup a 60A breaker for the reactor rework. Also I show the high voltage programmer I setup to fix my At tiny13A chips. Fixing those chips to finish my test took a good day’s worth of work which limited my time for this project. Anyway, next week I might fix the reactor but my priority will be getting the esp32 working as a client.

Todo List:

  1. Write a working Esp client script
  2. Design a new high lift propeller for the new geared motors
  3. Fix the reactor if I find the time
