Building 45 Part 5: Week of Physical Design

Not Much to Write About this Week

I got carried away with the CAD but I think I finally got the look I wanted

The original CAD model from last week was very rough and didn’t match the concept art. This week was dedicated to making the tile look nice and fit together. I also significantly reduced the weight of all 3d printed parts. If my next design is going to be hydrogen based then I need to practice making light parts. I have all the parts printed and ready but I ran out of balsa. I could’ve built it for this post but I’ll have to do that next week along with managing the wiring. I also don’t have the PCB in yet but hopefully the final assembly will happen for next week.

Iterating the parts to match the inital concept art.

Lots of 3D print cleanup

I enjoy the fast prototyping but 3d prints are still very time consuming

My parts from last week look missive compared to the new lightweight parts. I made everything thin and flexible to save weight and protect from impacts. The font was also something I had to worry about. I ended up modifying a standard font to better fit the design.

The LCD polarizers over the eye give a really cool effect. I'm excited to get the real PCB in!
Here is the updated control assembly with spacers on the screws

Next Steps

I have 5 weeks left and I’m almost to my first goal so I think I’ll have a demo together

I’m trying to do the physical, electrical, and programming design for this project so some parts are faster then others. I should be able to get more balsa on Monday and have the physical build done for next week. I’m also going to resolder all the wires to remove all the excess wire I added in. While I’m doing this I might as well switch to the RPi zero 2W I bought for the project as it is lighter. I’m hopefully out of the CAD->3D print->CAD loop so things should accelerate from here.

I also have all the server parts in so I’ll find time to get that built as well. I’ll just need to route power and mount everything. I’ve built 3 servers before this one so hopefully things go without a hitch.
